Finally home! Cold and delicious in Oslo. Here are some fast-selected photos from the trip to Rio Negro in the Brazilian Amazon in November 2010. Not the best resolution preserving meat here, but hopefully it can give an impression.
First: The most beautiful beach! This is the view from the hotel room in Barcelos, a small arm of the Rio Negro to an island covered by forest. In the rainy season the whole island is flooded up to the treetops. But now, due to drying and low water levels, revealing the most beautiful beaches themselves. And there we had the ...
So after meetings all day quickie we over in a little taxi boat, Yngve, Britta and me. The water here must have been over 30 degrees! No power, shallow, sunny and almost on the equator. Yngve and I took a little jog (like running on sandpaper ...) and when we went swimming afterwards felt the water actually preserving meat warm the body. Actually not very comfortable, but I is not gonna complain ...
Here is the ant sauce I wrote about in (gastronomic) travelogue from Barcelos. A kind of ant-vinagrette, ie finely chopped onions, peppers, chives (?) And tomatoes in a vinegar sauce flavored with lightly fried ants. It is the black top fish in the picture. Crunchy preserving meat delicious! And the fish, Tucunaré, heavenly. Do you know why Rio Negro named Rio Negro, ie the black river? preserving meat Here is the answer:
The river is very, very dark! It is because of much organic material in the water, preserving meat as Norwegian bog water. And there is little mud in the rivers up here, as opposed to the south of the Amazon, where the rivers can be almost beige. One of Manaus' biggest attractions is the "rivers meet", where the black Rio Negro meets the Rio Solimões bright. The rivers have not only different preserving meat color, water also has different temperatures and densities. Therefore, they do not mix with the same, but they form the most beautiful swirls of kilometers down. Worth a visit!
How do people like? Rio Negro is one of the very few regions in Brazil where indigenous peoples - Indians - are the majority. In Brazil, less than 0.5% of the population of Indians (yes, they call themselves Indians), but in the municipality of São Gabriel da Cachoeira, the figure is over 90%. This image shows a mother and a little girl on FOIRNs General Assembly, which also Yngve, Britta and I attended. FOIRN representing all the 23 indigenous preserving meat groups in the region.
The rainforest is home to over half of all plants and animals on the planet. I'm no biologist, but this must surely be an orchid? It stands in the São Gabriel da Cachoeria, just outside the house of ISA is the Rainforest Fund's main partner in Brazil.
